Finding your inner squirrel
January 21st was National Squirrel Day, and it reminded me of a moment I had while sitting at a red light recently. I watched a squirrel jumping from limb to limb and across the trees. It was a marvelous example of agility in action — a major strength of squirrels. Animals of all kinds can be great teachers for us, and watching him reminded me that when it’s time to move forward on goals — especially if they seem overwhelming — it’s always good to start with your strengths.
What does the squirrel do when he wants something? He uses his strength of balance, agility, and problem solving to reach his goal — to jump from tree to tree, to remember where he buried each acorn, or to get as much seed out of my bird feeder before he hears me yell from the kitchen window, “Save some for the birds!”
Think about what your strengths are, and the problem or goal ahead of you. How can you apply your particular analytical skills or creative skills to accomplish it? Are you a sensitive soul? Perhaps you can feel into what makes sense for the next step ahead. Are you a visual person? What do you see as a tactic that can help you make progress? Maybe you’re an inquisitive person. The ability to ask just the right questions about your goal will help you discover what’s most important right now. Whatever your personal strengths are, use them to take that next step forward in achieving your goal.
When I was first training to be an Animal Communicator, I connected with several wild animals including groundhogs, birds, and squirrels. What I learned from all of them is that nature’s creatures don’t fret over the myriad of things humans do. They keep their eye on the prize and on what they need to do in order to accomplish their goals. They rarely let distractions get in the way like us — in fact, they are bewildered by our inability to remain on point. So let’s take a nod from these amazing animals and stay centered while we remain focused on what’s really important… reaching our goals, and using our strengths to get there!
